My friend Susan has been my Bay Area food mentor. Want to know where to find the best burrito, Indian food, or pumpkin pie in San Francisco? Ask Susan. She knows. She’s eaten everywhere you’d ever want to eat and knows everything you’d ever want to know about a wide range of cuisines. When she mentioned her mom was making kimbap, or Korean sushi, for our monthly knitting group, I was immediately intrigued and excited. Kimbap (as described here) is not as fancy or fussy as Japanese sushi; in fact, it’s more of a casual picnic or snack food, something Susan would take for lunch on school field trips as a kid. The fillings may vary but often include rice, pickled vegetables, ground meat, fish cake and/or fried egg rolled up in seaweed. The end result is light and delicious.

When we took a break from knitting to enjoy the kimbap, I expected Mrs. Yoo to bring out a small plate for us to sample. Little did I know that this woman was cooking a full-on Asian feast! Along with the kimbap, she served handmade California rolls:

Steamed edamame:

And heaven on a plate…pork and leek potstickers from a local Asian grocery:

All I can say is YUM. What a nice treat! And the best part is, Susan’s birthday is coming up and her mom has plans to cook some traditional Korean party food. What can I do to score an invite to that shindig?

That looks wonderful. So good.
It was AWESOME! Thanks, Mrs. Yoo!!! You ROCK!
