Difference of Opinion

Doesn’t this look delicious? It’s Cod with Tomato Cream Sauce, a recipe from Eating Well magazine. Flaky cod in a sauce made with canned tomatoes, wine, herbs and a touch of half and half. The recipe suggests serving it over rice, couscous or a similar grain; I served it cioppino-style with some crusty bread.  And even though the recipe has its pros (easy, fast, relatively healthy), the big fat con was that it just didn’t taste that great. To me, anyway.

Corey, on the other hand, ate it with gusto and proclaimed it “pretty damn good.” Even after he finished the fish, he went back for seconds on the sauce, which I found strange considering the sauce was the blandest part of the dish. Normally, we have very similar tastes, so it’s always odd to me when I hate something and he loves it. In such moments, I’m faced with the ultimate cooking dilemma: do I abandon this recipe because I hated it, or keep it in the rotation because my spouse seemed to enjoy it? My mom has this problem with meatloaf: she (for some unknown and unfathomable reason) hates loaved meat, but makes it on a regular basis because my stepdad loves it. I can’t imagine making and eating something that I don’t love; that’s too much work for too little reward.

What about you, dear readers? Do you hang on to recipes because your family seems to love them, or abandon those that fail to receive a unanimous vote of approval?

Your timing is impeccable! I just brought some Wild cod home and was pondering which way to cook it up…Pic looks tasty to me!

If Mikey likes it, I will cook it. Although I have not come across a food that he does not like yet. Me on the other hand, I can’t stand..Kabocha! GASP!
Silence falls over the blogosphere. :)

I don’t have any half/half though, sigh, steamed with lemon it is…

My dad LOVES curry and my mom HATES it…but she makes it for him whenever he feels like it. She also HATES peanut butter but makes the peanut butter-coconut sauce for him (and the rest of us) to put on our satay skewered chicken (or pork)!

In OUR house, however, we eat our faves when the other is not around! =)

i don’t know about fish, but that bread looks great! someone really awesome must have brought it over.

  4. We normally make something a couple of times–trying different variations to try to appease the taste buds of one or the other–before we abandon it. Noel also has a bunch of secret stash ingredients–hot sauce, salt, peppers, cheeses–that he’ll add to thing to suit his taste.

  5. My boyfriend is from the South and therefore loves traditional Southern food: cornbread, hush puppies, fried green tomatoes, baked beans… I have to admit, at first I didn’t think this was my kind of food and I used to make it for his sake rather than mine. But the more I make it, the more I enjoy it too (and I’ve found ways to comrpomise, like my own healthier baked bean recipes, or whole wheat fried green tomatoes.) So I guess tastes can change and adapt–and for me, a large part of enjoying food is its social aspect so, yes, I’ll make something for someone else even if I’m less than thrilled by it.

  6. i’ll keep it, but tweak my portion for my tastes. it’s unusual that my husband makes a big deal about any sort of food (he claims it’s because he likes it all so much), so when he does say something i want to take note :)

I would tell my husband tough luck – if he likes then he can cook it. Harsh? Perhaps. But he loves me anyway.

I usually try to modify the recipe to my taste, so we both like it. If it’s something I really don’t like, I’ll make it upon special request, but won’t make it routinely. Sometimes if you don’t make it for a while they forget all about it! Problem solved. ; )

  10. This looks delicious! I love anything with tomatoes :) Healthy too!

Beth that photo is absolutely beautiful.

I often cook things I don’t personally like just because PB likes it. One example is steak. I would maybe order a steak once a year or less out in a restaurant, but I hate the way it tastes at home. I buy it anyway and sometimes eat it just to not make two different things for us. Other times I will make it for him and just eat double the vegetables myself and call it a day.
